Karma had to go. What in the hell was I thinking by taking her out of the country with me and the kids? I asked myself on the shuttle ride to the golf course with Jerry. He was rambling on and on about nothing, but he soon got the hint that I wasn’t interested in his conversation so early in the morning.
“You seem to have something on your mind, my new friend. What’s eatin’ at you?” Jerry said, snapping me out of my trance.
“Oh . . . um. Well, I was just thinking about some things I need to tend to when I get home, that’s all.”
“Home? Aren’t you here because you were running away from stress back home? I mean, you’re here because you wanted to get away from the ole ox for a while, right?”
I was perplexed, and I huffed to let Jerry know it. “Ole ox? What are you talking about?” I said, elevating my voice just a notch below shouting.
“Your wife. Isn’t she the reason you’re here with your nanny and kids—to get some peace? I mean if I could’ve left my baggage at home, I would’ve.” He winked. “But she wasn’t having it.”
Suddenly, I realized Jerry was not as smart as I thought he was. He sounded rather stupid, and it took all I had in me to refrain myself. I wanted to choke the living daylights out of him. “Jerry, my wife is dead.” His dark complexion went white within a matter of seconds. “She was killed―not by me, but by some creeps who felt like acting a fool that night by taking an innocent life—on our anniversary.”
Jerry seemed apologetic as he stammered to speak. “I’m . . . um . . . I . . . I’m sorry. I didn’t know or else I—”
“Don’t worry about it,” I responded, cutting him off. “You couldn’t have known unless I told you. And for the record, I’m not sleeping with my nanny. She is who we say she is—the nanny.”
Jerry shrugged. “A’ight. I’ll say no more about the subject then.”
We were both silent for the remainder of the trip to the course. Once the shuttle stopped, Jerry motioned to let me off first. I threw the club carrying case over my back then headed off. I turned to Jerry just after stepping off the last stair. “I hope you don’t take this ass whippin’ personal, Jerry. I came here to play golf, and that’s what I intend on doing.”
He cracked a smile then burst into a loud country laugh. “I like that. A man with a sense of humor,” he said, chuckling. “Let me see. How about a little friendly wager?”
“No problem. What do you have in mind?”
“If I win, you owe my family and me a movie rental package and room service for the evening. If you win, I’ll do the same for you and your folks.”
“Bet,” I said, sticking my hand out to shake his.
Just then my cell rang. Oh no . .
